New Email Server

In response to our growing client base, we have transitioned to new Email Servers.  This allows us to provide better, more consistent email service to our existing clients.  As well as gives us the ability to grow with our client base for years to come.

As a result of this, we recommend that all people using a GPN email account make some modifications to their email account settings.  This is not a required change, but will result in better reliability on their email account going forward.  Previously our clients have used coool.ca (or the domain you chose) as their incoming and outgoing email server.  Going forward we would like to have all clients change to using pop.coool.ca (or the domain you chose) for their incoming mail server, and smtp.coool.ca (or the domain you chose) as the outgoing mail server.

We have updated our account setup instructions to include these changes.  Those instructions can be accessed by clicking here, then clicking on the icon for the email program you are using.  If you would like to make this change, but require more assistance than the website can provide please feel free to file a Support Ticket using our Client Portal, or contact us at 780-882-6623 between 9 AM and 4 PM.

County expands high-speed Internet service
BY JEANNE GAGNON - Peace Country Sun Writer

County residents unable to get high-speed Internet because trees, valleys, hills or their isolated location hinders the signal, will soon be able to surf the ’Net.

The County of Grande Prairie’s high-speed Internet service is now moving into the hard-to-service areas, as it has nearly covered all the easy-to-service ones, it was announced recently.

“Is a person less important living down in their valley or riverbank than a person living on top of it? Because they choose to live there, does that mean they don’t get the same service as the person on top,” asked the county’s Internet committee chairman Richard Harpe. “Our mandate, when we started, was to service everybody in the County of Grande Prairie that wanted high speed.”

The county has set up 10 Internet towers in agreement with GPN Wireless Network Solutions Ltd., a local Internet service provider. The towers are located at Bear Hill Park, Elmworth curling club, Beaverlodge, Teepee Creek fire station, Clairmont, Goodfare, Richmond Hill, Minhas (near the Correction Line), Demmitt landfill and another repeater near Demmitt.

“Because of some landowner problems, we are now putting the Demmitt tower on the Demmitt landfill site. Demmitt should be up and running shortly,” said Harpe.

Residents living in a flat area of the county with a minimal number of trees typically have a clear line of communication with one of the Internet towers.

“If the Internet service provider installs a tower in there, they will have a clear connection,” said the county’s information systems manager Natalia Madden.

But servicing areas where the land slopes and many trees surround a home is harder, said Madden, “because you don’t have a straight line to view one of the already installed towers.”

Residents living in the those areas will get a small tower or antenna so they can get the signal from one of the county’s 10 towers. Installation will be done on a per-demand basis throughout the next year, said Madden.

“The service is in the area already, you just need to have a little, like a ladder, a little step to grab the service,” she said. “We have no idea, right now, of how many of them are going to be (installed). We don’t know how many hard areas we have. The main challenge is to schedule … to schedule a priority or just to schedule the installation.”

The county initially budgeted $260,000 to provide the service and to date has spent slightly more than $82,000 installing the eight towers covering the easy-to-service areas. It will use the remaining $178,000 to cover the hard-to-service areas. Harpe said he knows of about 15 people who requested the service, but suspects there are more.
